So we want to make sure you get the most out of each one, and these candle care tips from the National Candle Association should help. 

Before you light it

• Trim the wick. Your wick should always be about 1/4 inch for safe burning. You can trim it with scissors or nail clippers.
• Keep the wax pool clear. Make sure there are no wick trimmings or other debris in the wax pool. 
• Use the right candleholder. If you're putting your candle in another vessel, make sure it is sturdy, heat resistant, and large enough for your candle.  

While it's burning

• Never leave a candle unattended. Light it in a space with good ventilation, where you can keep an eye on it, and away from anything flammable.
• Do not burn longer than four hours at a time. Be sure to allow wax to cool for two hours before relighting. 
• Keep out of reach of children and pets. Place it in an area where it will not be knocked over.

Safely extinguish

• Use a candle snuffer for maximum safety. Never use water to extinguish—it could splatter or shatter the glass.
• Don't touch or move the candle until the wax has cooled.

Getting out the last of the wax

1. Warm the jar over a candle warmer or in a shallow pot of water. 
2. Pour out the excess wax into a heat-safe container. Put that container in the freezer.
3. While the candle jar is still warm, wipe it out with a clean paper towel, getting out any remaining wax or smudges. 
4. Immediately wash it out with hot water and soap until it is completely clean.
5. Once the wax in the heat-safe container has frozen solid, remove it from the freezer and tip over the container. The wax should detach easily and you can add it to a candle warmer or make a new candle with other wax remnants. 

Once the candle is empty

• Upcycle your candle jar. Turn it into a pot for a succulent. Use it as a drinking glass (they make great eclectic cocktail glasses). Store pet treats, bath bombs, pencils, or pretty much anything else around your house. 
• Recycle your candle jar. Already have too much stuff in your home? We get it. Use the instructions above to get out the last of the wax and clean your jar (clean containers are best for recycling) then recycle curbside.
